Demand

Demand captures anticipated demand for new electricity production to support population and economic growth, as well as indicators that express interest in and commitment to decarbonization and inclusion of nuclear energy as part of the decarbonization process. Use 'Demand' to assess predicted population growth, economic growth, future electricity demand, the scale of a nation's climate goals and action taken to meet those goals, and intention to include nuclear energy as part of a clean energy transition.

Growth in Electricity Demand

Growth in electricity demand refers to the increase in the amount of electrical energy consumed by residential, commercial, industrial, and other sectors over a specified period. This growth is typically driven by factors such as economic development, population expansion, urbanization, technological advancements, and shifts in energy usage patterns.

Net Electricity Imports

The difference between the total amount of electricity a country imports from other countries and the total amount of electricity it exports to them over a specific period. It reflects whether a country is a net importer (imports exceed exports) or a net exporter (exports exceed imports) of electricity.

Retiring Capacity 2030

Anticipated generation capacity lost to plant retirement by 2030 by primary fuel type. All plants within the source dataset are assumed operational. A plant is anticipated to retire if its commissioning year plus its expected years to retirement is less than or equal to 2030. Note that this does not take into consideration any equipment replacement since the commissioning of the plant. Expected years to retirement is based on the average age of retired power plants in the United States between 2000 and 2015, by fuel type (EIA).
